Gold has been reported from many streams in northern and western New Hampshire. The following is a partial list:

Lincoln - Notch Brook
Lisbon - Salmon Hole Brook. Reported to be the site of an 1866 con scheme when a sluice box was salted with gold to attract investors. Wild Ammonoosuc River. Ammonoosuc River below Bath
Northern Coos County. - Indian Stream. Gold is also reported in glacial deposits in the area. Perry Stream. Dead Diamond River. Swift Diamond River
I will be adding more as time permits. If you have any “other” gold locations or photos that you would like to add please send me an email
These tiny New Hampshire gold flakes are clean, yellow, and of high purity. Gold nuggets of 1/5 up to 3/4 ounce were taken from the Wild Ammonoosuc in the old days. Normal gold size, however, is very fine. Most of the Gold from this area is stream-worn. This gold was found in Grafton County.
The first discoveries of gold in New Hampshire (at least those reported by white men) were made in the Ammonoosuc district in 1864. Apparently, there was enough gold produced so that about $50,000 worth was sent to the Philadelphia Mint. Aside from gracial transport, possible local sources for the placer gold are quartz veins found in the vicinity. Panning can probably produce traces of gold from most streams in the state.
