A small sample of the “gold display” at the Yreka, California Court House. All found in that county.
This years trip began with a week of dredging on Thompson Creek near Happy Camp, California. Unfortunately the gold was very sparse on that particular creek and after six days I had less than a gram to show for my efforts. So a good friend of mine from Washington offered to let us dredge on his claim near Yreka. It was a small creek, barely big enough for a four inch dredge and nestled deep in mountains. When we arrived at the new location I unpacked the dredge first and hit the water. Wow! Within a few minutes of dredging I had amassed more of the yellow metal than the whole previous week on Thompson. And it just got better and better, with lots of small jewelry grade gold and the occasional nugget turning up in my riffles. My friend Tony and his girlfriend Lori even took a few days off work and drove down from Washington to join us on his claim. All said, I ended up with a little over ¾ ounce in just eight days of dredging and some great memories to last a lifetime. Can’t wait for next year!

Gold ore from an old hardrock mine shaft.
Metal detecting in an old mine shaft near the claim.
Cleanup after one tank of gas.
My best day’s cleanup, big nugget is 1.5 dwt.
Total gold from the last 8 days dredging, 15.2 dwt.
Supper time, grillin’ the pork chops...mmmmm
